At 9pm on Saturday night, Tsu stepped out of The Statesmen Hotel in a figure-hugging black dress that extended down to her ankles and had a large slit up one side, hinting at the flesh beneath. A sparkling mask was covering her face. The door to a Mercedes-Benz S-Class was opened for her and she ducked into the car, where Osman was already waiting.
âYou donât need to wear your mask just yet,â he told her.
âI love this thing,â she said. âI want to wear it for as long as possible. Here, put yours on.â
She picked up Osmanâs mask from his lap and slipped into onto his face before running her palm slowly down his cheek.
As they drove towards what she hoped would be Nabyrâs mansion, she caught the driver occasionally eyeing her in the mirror, and was glad she had put the mask on early.
With the direction they were heading, she was soon confident she would be attending Nabyrâs party. Her heart and stomach were fluttering, but she remained the picture of calm.
They approached the modernist mansion and Tsu saw the field where she had spent so many miserable hours a few days earlier. The car drove up to the huge gates, which opened to reveal a guard on either side of the driveway, each holding a machine gun.
Outside the sliding glass doorway to the house, they stepped out of the car and were handed champagne from a tray held by a woman wearing a tiny gold bikini. Tsu took a sip, the top of the glass touching the bottom of the mask that rested just above her mouth.
They walked down a path that was lit by torches with open flames, and into a giant living space with immaculate white-on-white decor. Huge contemporary sculptures were dotted around the room. On one side, an entire wall was a fountain, and a clearly inebriated woman was dancing in it and laughing, the water falling into her champagne glass.
âJust enjoy yourself and mingle,â Osman told Tsu. âIâll catch up with you later.â
Tsu clinked his glass and went off to mingle. But it turned out that wasnât so easy. Nobody seemed interested in talking. They just looked her up and down through their masks, and spent their time imbibing as many substances as they could, whether it was the endless champagne or the white lines that appeared and quickly disappeared. Even the extravagant sculptures were fair game for racking up a line so long as they had a flat surface.
As the night went on, Tsu noticed that more of the guests were indulging in a different kind of pleasure. They were locked in passionate embraces, and engaged in acts that would normally be done in private.
More and more items of clothing were being discarded, and she hoped the masks wouldnât be discarded too. It would be useful to see the faces of some of the people at the party, but it was more important that her own stayed on. Nabyr had likely seen her
